About the Father of Indian Mother-of-Pearl Artistry
Anukul Charan Munshi (1884-1964) is one of India's greatest artists of all time. He is considered by the prominent art community as the father of Indian oyster art (mother of pearl artistry).
The Mother-of-Pearl Artistry in India
Munshi introduced the Mother-of-Pearl Artistry in India with a completely new perspective. He was the first successful artist to carve human figures on oysters. In his early days in the Chowachi Zamindar family, he established a factory called 'Mother of Pearl Factory' where he started practicing the oyster industry along with his newly recruited apprentices and employees. In this historic factory, Munshi taught oyster craft to his son Manu Munshi and nephew Pratip Munshi.
